GuaranteesOnRecord collects, for contested questions about the Australian consumer
guarantees, what the evidence establishes - separated by what kind of evidence it is: what the
ACCC, the Australian Consumer Law or a state consumer regulator documents, what changed and on
what date, what is observed to happen in practice, where two named sources disagree, and what
retail repeats with no primary source behind it. Every claim carries a direct quote and a
link to the page the quote is on.
The consumer guarantees are statutory rights under the Australian Consumer Law, which is
federal and applies the same way in every state and territory. Which regulator handles a
complaint, which tribunal hears it and what it costs to bring do vary by state; this site
says which is which rather than resolving it for you. They are also not warranties - a
manufacturer's or retailer's warranty is a separate promise offered on top of the guarantees,
and it cannot cut them down.
Claims that failed the evidence check are published too, with the reason, so you can judge the
check as well as the claims. Where an idea is widely repeated, we say whether we went looking
for a primary source, what we searched, and what we found - including when we found nothing.

about your own situation. The consumer guarantees turn on facts we do not have - what you
bought, what you were told, what has gone wrong and how long you have had it - and a rule that
is stated correctly here can still be the wrong rule for you. We do not advise on individual

Sources can be wrong, and search behaviour changes without notice: a claim dated 2016 may have
stopped being true years ago and said nothing about it. Read the dates.
A claim missing from a subject means it did not survive our checks, not that no such fact
exists. A refused claim is one whose evidence did not support it as written - several are
probably true and badly sourced. If you find a claim its quote does not support, the
“Tell us” link in the footer goes straight to us; corrections are welcome.
